Anna Getty's Pre and Post Natal Yoga

This is a testimonial to prenatal yoga.

Okay, so I am a yoga teacher, of course I am going to tell you that yoga does not only a body good but the spirit and the mind as well and in this case your baby too.

A month after my wedding I had big plans, big, big plans. A two-year plan for when I was going to get pregnant. I wanted a year with my husband, a year for me and within that time a two-year 'conscious' pre-conception plan. Seven months after this big announcement we conceived, so clearly the powers that be, namely my daughter, felt that I was ready and that seven months was indeed plenty of time to do what I thought I wanted to do in said 'plan.'

The plan included a diet elimination, including meat, wheat, sugar, dairy and eggs. All the fun stuff as well as alcohol and anything else recreational. That was not a problem; I was a yogi for crying out loud. I also juiced, ate mostly raw, did Chinese herbs, colonics and homeopathy. And if possible tons more yoga and meditation. You see I wanted to create a blank canvas on which my unborn child could paint.

I had prepared for college, career and marriage why not for getting pregnant?
The culmination of this plan included prenatal teacher training and prenatal yoga every day until I conceived and later gave birth. Now mind you, the people at my yoga center warned me, 'do not take this course if you are not prepared to get pregnant right NOW, for some reason everyone gets pregnant within days of completing it', they told me.

'Not me, not yet, I have a plan, a two year plan and I am only six months in' I replied. A month later there I was. With child in womb. And I was thrilled. What two-year plan? Seven months is perfect.

Something happened with the yoga. Yoga had made the difference in the 7 years preceding this time but this was something else. It was as if the yoga was a tuning fork and the instrument was not only me but also the being (my future child) coming down to earth to make music. I don't mean to be too esoteric and New Age-y but I am simply sharing my story, the way I experienced it. First the excitement hit and then nausea, fatigue and gas and through it all I did the yoga. In the first few months I would talk to women who had had their babies and they warned me. ' When you hit the fourth month you will be hormonal. When you hit the fifth month you are going get constipated. When you hit the sixth month, your feet will start hurting. When you hit the seventh month your legs will start cramping, When you hit the eight month your lower back will start hurting and in the last month you will be exhausted, feeling like hell and wanting to get the darn baby OUT.'

Nope. Nothing. None of it. Zilch. I contribute it all to my prenatal yoga practice.
Some weeks I did it once a week and on others 2-4 times a week. Most of the time I did it everyday. It made me feel good, it made me feel energized, connected to my body and to my baby.

Through breathe work, postures and meditations I was able to work through any fears that came up around birth and becoming a mother.

I felt sensuous, womanly and motherly all because of the yoga. I slept well and experienced a comfortable pregnancy and a smooth and flowing birth experience. And, no it did not take away the pain of childbirth but having done all that yoga assisted me in drawing on inner strength and doing cat/cows and squats during labor helped me refocus some of my energy and kill some time. Also, I truly believe this, and my friends who also did yoga during their pregnancies agree, that post-partum was a breeze because of the yoga. Our bodies where able to bounce back because we had, strengthened and toned our bodies for nine months. I also taught prenatal yoga throughout my pregnancy and because the yoga made such a difference for me I was inspired to put together a DVD that any pregnant woman could do.

This is my story. I hope that it may inspire you and your friends.
Blessings.
